LAPPS-CLARIN

Transatlantic Collaboration between LAPPS and CLARIN: Semantic, Technical and Infrastructural Interoperability of Services

Key members of the Language Application Grid (LAPPS Grid) (Brandeis University and Vassar College) and the European Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure (CLARIN) Research Infrastructure (University of Tübingen and Charles University in Prague) are seeking support from the Mellon Foundation for a two-year $396,825 USD collaboration project with the objective of achieving semantic, technical, and infrastructural interoperability of services contributed by the two initiatives. The LAPPS Grid and CLARIN are each developing a web service infrastructure to support research and development of applications for language analysis. The LAPPS Grid is an NSF-funded project among four US Institutions (Brandeis University, Vassar College, Carnegie-Mellon University, and the Linguistic Data Consortium at the University of Pennsylvania) that is currently focused on providing services to support work in the fields of natural language processing (NLP) and language technology. The CLARIN EU infrastructure consortium (ERIC), which includes 16 European countries, the Dutch Language Union, and the UK as an observer, is a distributed network of 33 certified centers supporting research by scholars in the digital humanities and social sciences, including basic and advanced NLP tools in many languages. CLARIN provides workflow engines and multi-lingual services through the LINDAT/CLARIN Center in Prague and the CLARIN Center in Tübingen.

We seek support for a collaborative effort between CLARIN (in particular, LINDAT/CLARIN and WebLicht (Web-based Linguistic Chaining Tool)/Tübingen) and the LAPPS Grid to make the services we currently provide, as well as future services we will develop, transparently interoperable and mutually accessible from our respective infrastructures. Collaborative access between the LAPPS Grid and CLARIN is achievable due to standards and best practices for interoperability that have emerged over the past decade and that were applied internally to both LAPPS and CLARIN.
