Coreference, Discourse Relations and Information Structure in a Contrastive Perspective

The aim of the project was twofold: (i) to examine the interplay of information structure of the sentence, textual coreference and basic discourse relations on systematically annotated corpora taking also into consideration the underlying syntactic sentence structure, and to use the results in several applicational tasks such as text segmentation and generation, textual topic(s) identification and text modeling, and (ii) to approach these issues that are essential for the main function of language, namely communication, as they are rendered by different means in different languages (focusing on Czech, English and German, but taking into account also some other languages). The proposal took the advantage of the existence of large computerized corpora of language data (some of them have been mentioned above), first of all the existing annotated corpus of the Prague Dependency Treebank PDT 2.5 and contributed substantially contribute to the development of the complemented version PDT 3.0.

The results and research steps, covering many topics, can be summed up as follows:

(i) Preparation of data (annotation, emendation of annotation, publishing the data, publishing annotation manuals)

We have published Prague Discourse Treebank 1.0 (PDiT 1.0) and Prague Dependency Treebank 2.5 in 2012, and added further annotations and enhancements a year later in the Prague Dependency 3.0 release. Each of the published corpora is accompanied by corresponding documentation form – thorough annotation manuals. In 2015, the last year of the project, the manual for annotating information structure was also translated to English and further enhanced. A detailed description of the PDiT 1.0 build-up can be also found in the doctoral dissertation of L. Poláková, defended in September 2015.

Several other annotations were carried out during the project duration, which haven’t been published yet. It is mainly annotations of parallel texts in Czech and English for nominal coreference and information structure, annotation of alternative connective devices (AltLex’s) and annotation of disruptions in discourse structure. Also these new annotation projects have been provided with adequate documentation. Annotation of alternative connective devices is moreover described in detail in another doctoral dissertation defended in (October) 2015, by M. Rysová.

(ii) Theoretical analyses of single discourse structure phenomena

Before cross-linguistic comparison of discourse structure phenomena, single non-trivial issues were examined based on the annotated data. In the area of coreference and bridging anaphora, special attention was paid to the ability of generic nouns to be a part of coreferential chains. The research on discourse relations concentrated among other things on the description of alternative lexicalizations of discourse connectives (multiword discourse phrases), starting from delimitation of an alternative lexicalization, over description of its role in a syntactic structure and finally arriving at experimental automatic search for alternative lexicalizations in texts. The full annotation of the topic-focus articulation (information structure) in the Prague Dependency Treebank allowed us to test hypotheses about the relation between information structure and word order in Czech (e.g. the hypothese of a basic ordering of participants).

(iii) Interplay among different aspects of text structure

The annotations and preparatory analyses of single aspects of text coherence resulted in the analysis of the interplay of these factors of coherence. For example, questions of the relation between discourse structure and syntax were researched (independent meaning of some kind of dependent clauses; discourse meaning of causal clauses). Another survey dealed with the relation between contextual boundness as a feature of information structure and presence of a coreferential antecedent, testing the intuitive hypothesis that the contextual boundness is based on the presence of a coreferential chain and explaining the cases where these features do not co-occur. Furthermore, the multi-perspective annotation of text structure allowed us to study cases of a weak coherence – instances in texts where no coherence relation can be observed. The combination of these points of view resulted in the analysis of salience, too. The salience of entities presented in a text was examined in the relation to its position in the coreferential chain and its value of the topic-focus articulation. The research on salience proceeded from the very first steps describing how to get salience diagrams from the existing annotation in the Prague Dependency Treebank to machine-learning based procedures and applications. Various aspects of interplays among different kinds of coherence relations were described in the joint monograph Discourse and Coherence (Zikánová et al., 2015).

(iv) Comparison with other languages

The different aspects of discourse coherence in Czech were compared to other languages, especially to English, but also to German and Russian. In the Prague Czech-English Dependency Treebank (PCEDT), English part of the corpus was newly annotated from the point of view of the topic-focus articulation. The guidelines for the annotation which arose from the comparison and experience with Czech guidelines were published. Starting from this annotation, the subjective word order in Czech, English and partially German was analyzed. Further, comparative research on coreferential relations in English, Czech and Russian was carried out (structure of the coreferential chain; indefiniteness, pronominalization, ellipsis). The research on salience in discourse resulted in experiments with identification of salience in Czech and English. Approaches to discourse relations were compared in the PDT and GECCo corpus (Saarland, Germany).

(v) Automatic solutions of language tasks

Some of the tasks resulted in general automatic solutions and predictions. Thus, in the second half of the project, machine-learning based procedures identifying the salience in discourse were developed. In the same vein, machine translation experiment translating discourse connectives from English to Czech was carried out, in the cooperation with the Idiap Research Institute (Martigny, Switzerland). In other cases, possibilities of automatic processing were studied and the research will be further continued (automatic detection of alternative lexicalizations of discourse connectives in the PDT, automatic coreference resolution in different languages). As another result, the PlayCoref game providing data about coreference understanding was developed and presented.

(vi) International cooperation

An exchange with the our longtime cooperation partners from University of Pennsylvania was possible on a Philadelphia workshop in 2012 and in Prague 2014, a new cooperation was established in 2013 with the Swiss IDIAP and in 2014 with the Universities of Saarbrücken (Czech and German discourse annotation contrasting language specificities and theoretical approaches) and Potsdam (common Czech-German research proposal).

(vii) Important publications

The results of the project were published in research monographs, as special chapters in books, as data, as articles in journals and especially in proceedings of computational linguistics.
