This talk describes ongoing work in the multilingual SynSemClass ontology. In our lexicon, synonymy is understood in terms of ‘contextual-synonymy’ (Palmer 1981) in that context is defined in terms of the semantic roles expressed by the arguments and adjuncts of a verb, (either explicitly or implicitly and with possible restrictions). In this sense, monolingual and cross-lingual verbal synonyms are grouped into classes, considered here as ontological units representing individual event types. Based on previous work in German (Urešová et al. 2018), Spanish data have been extracted from a sentence-aligned parallel corpus. Each Spanish verb (sense) in the ontology is then described in terms of its syntactic-semantic properties and linked to a set of external resources available online, such as AnCora (Taulé et al. 2008) or Spanish FrameNet (Subirats 2009), thus enriching the annotation and enabling interoperability. The addition of Spanish verbal synonyms in SynSemClass has a twofold value as it enriches the ontology with a new language at the same time it links data from several independent resources for Spanish.
