Despite growing interest in NLP for language documentation and linguistic analysis, a gap remains between NLP research and the needs of linguists. My research takes a user-centered approach to developing computational tools for very low-resource languages, focusing on morphological segmentation and automatic glossing. I will discuss how engaging directly with linguists can reveal limitations not captured by computational benchmarks, and how these insights can shape both the problems we pursue and the systems we design. I will also briefly discuss ongoing work extending this perspective to typological analysis.
