CVHM Comics Competition

Since 2011, the Malach Visual History Center has held an annual competition for young comics authors. High and elementary school students are given the opportunity to submit their works based on viewing online available interviews with Holocaust survivors from the collection of the USC SF or USHMM Visual History Archive. The technique, format and length used are left entirely to the discretion and preferences of the participants themselves. The top three in each category are subsequently rewarded and their works are exhibited online as well as physically in a gallery at the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics of MFF UK.

Task:

Create a comic or other visual work based on recordings with WWII memorabilia,

located in the USC Shoah Foundation and USHMM Archives. Information on access to archives can be found on the CVH Malach website (https://ufal.mff.cuni.cz/malach/en) in the section

"Comics Contest". Another interview can be seen directly in CVH Malach.

We do not recommend capturing the entire life-story of an old-timer with a comic book, but choosing from its narration a shorter full-length episode, story...

Rules:

• the work can be created by any artistic or visual technique

(drawing, painting, graphic art, collage, photography, animation, film or a combination thereof),

• the comic or the work must not exceed 1 page of any format,

• A maximum of 3 works by the same author will be accepted in the competition,

• each competition comic must be provided with the author's name, along with the name and address of the school she attends,

• the closing date of the competition is 8th January 2024,

• the jury will decide on the results of the competition by 12th January 2024,

• The awards ceremony for the authors of the winning works will take place within the 14th anniversary of the Centre of Visual History Malach held on 22nd January 2024 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University
