Discourse structure in text and dialogue: theoretical and empirical perspectives

Abstract: In this talk I will compare and contrast both theoretical and empirical takes on discourse structure in text in dialogue. Beginning with text, where I will review efforts in RST, SDRT and the PDTB, I will then turn to dialogue where we need some more theory and also some new ideas for discourse parsing. I will illustrate with data collected from the STAC corpus, which is an ERC project on strategic dialogue.
