About Translingual Europe

Translingual Europe 2009 is the second edition of a conference on new developments and applications in translation technology organized by EuroMatrix Plus. This event will take place on May 13th and 14th in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and seat of the current EU presidency.

In May 2008, the Berlin Conference Translingual Europe brought together 120 invited representatives of more than 50 companies and other organisations sharing an interest in translingual technologies. A number of new initiatives, projects and collabortations resulted from this meeting.

In the meantime the field has kept moving.

In November of 2008 the Council of the European Union adopted a "Resolution on a European strategy for multilingualism" that explicitly encourages "the development of language technologies, in particular in the field of translation and interpretation, firstly by promoting cooperation between the Commission, the Member States, local authorities, research bodies and industry, and secondly by ensuring convergence between research programmes, the identification of areas of application and the deployment of the technologies across all EU languages".

The international conference Translingual Europe 2009 aims to inform invited respresentatives of industry, commerce, research and administration about recent progress in translation technology. A variety of applications will be demonstrated and discussed. A further purpose of the meeting is a deliberation on the opportunities and challenges for European research, development and technology transfer in this important application area of information technology.

About EuroMatrixPlus

EuroMatrixPlus: Bringing Machine Translation for European Languages to the User

The EuroMatrixPlus project is a follow up of the project EuroMatrix (http://www.euromatrix.net/) aimed at a major push in machine translation (MT) technology applying the most advanced MT technologies systematically to all pairs of EU languages. Special attention is being paid to the languages of the new and near-term prospective member states. As part of this application development, EuroMatrixPlus designs and investigates novel combinations of statistical techniques and linguistic knowledge sources as well as hybrid MT architectures. EuroMatrixPlus addresses urgent European economic and social needs by concentrating on European languages and on high-quality translation to be employed for the publication of technical, social, legal and political documents. EuroMatrixPlus aims at enriching the statistical MT approach with novel learning paradigms and experiment with new combinations of methods and resources from statistical MT, rule-based MT, shallow language processing and computational lexicography/morphology.

The main objectives of the project are:
