A coreference chain groups some referring expressions (or mentions) that all refer to the same extra-linguistic entity. We present an overview of the methods and approaches for the study of mentions and coreference chains in French, illustrated with the Democrat project. Moreover, we explore the links that put together theoretical linguistics, computer-aided corpus linguistics, and natural language processing.
