The KPML Environment
4The Komet-Penman Multilingual system is an environment  for the creation of resources for natural language generation:
–These resources can be multilingual:
Sharing resources where possible, while distinguishing where needed
–KPML is an environment, in which one can create any type of resource for natural language generation: in a single KPML session, we can run resources like text planning, lexicogrammars, etc. in parallel, switching between languages to generate output in the languages for which the resources have been defined
4KPML implements a version of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG)
KPML is an environment, a workbench for developing tools: it is not a grammar in itself.

The theoretical (linguistic) foundations for KPML come from Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, and any tool/module needs to be cast in terms of the perspective of SFL (or SFG) when developing it in KPML.

On the next slide we have a look at what that “perspective” sort of looks like.
