Prefixes of loaned verbs in Czech One of the common means of word formation in the Czech language is prefixation. We will focus on prefixes attached to the verbs of foreign origin. There are many loaned verbs in Czech, taken especially from Latin or English. They keep their foreign root, sometimes together with a foreign prefix, but the suffix is Czech. The most commen suffix is -ovat. Such verbs get often the both aspects - perfective as well as imperfective. It might seem that these verbs may remain as they were taken from another language - with the only change in the suffix. However, loaned verbs are often accompanied with a Czech prefix that in fact change nothing in the verb - neither its meaning, nor its aspect. The reason of such prefix addition is probably only highliting their perfective status in a particular context.
